Isaiah 9:6

Dec 19, 2021

When we think of peace we may think of simply the absence of war, but the Hebrew concept of peace holds so much more meaning. Shalom, the Hebrew word that is translated peace in our Bibles, means completeness, wholeness, soundness, welfare and peace. The concept of shalom does include the absence of external conflict but it also includes an inner sense of wholeness and well-being. Shalom can be confounding because it can exist even in the midst of trials and suffering, even in the midst of overwhelming circumstances. In the words of Paul, it passes understanding. Shalom is experienced when we release our worries and fears and put our trust in Jesus. The fourth candle of Advent celebrates the coming of the Prince of Peace, Jesus.

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us. And the government will rest on His shoulders. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
